The Coronavirus pandemic has spread to all places now in the last 2 years and many still are getting infected. The news is that GCC has spent over a huge amount of Rs 670 crores to fight this deadly infection in Chennai. In the current financial year, no funds have been allotted to fight Coronavirus infection.
During 2020-21 and 2021-22 financial years, an amount of Rs 671 crores was spent to fight Coronavirus infection in Chennai. This was brought to light by budget estimates presented by Chennai Corporation Council on Saturday. This included expenses that incurred in the vaccination camps and testing of samples etc. It is known that these 2 were carried out by the TN government.
It is noteworthy that the Rs 671 crores money was spent by Greater Chennai Corporation or GCC towards food expenses, medicines procurement, face masks, equipment, hiring manpower and electrical arrangements in Covid care facilities etc. There is now a gaping hole in the GCC wallet due to the huge money spent in the last2 years.
It must be taken into note that GCC has provided free food to the patients in the Covid wards plus hired temporary doctors, FOCUS volunteers and survey workers etc. For hiring manpower alone, an amount of Rs 116 crores was spent by GCC in Chennai during 2021-22. This was out of the total amount Rs 310 crores that were spent during the period. Information is that during 2020-21 an amount of RS 150 crores were spent by GCC for manpower alone.
