Just when it seemed that everything has become normal regarding Coronavirus infection, the number of daily or fresh Covid-19 cases has been increasing.

In this scenario, Mr. J. Radhakrishnan, health secretary, has written a letter to all district collectors and to the Chennai Corporation commissioner regarding the need to enforce Covid-19 protocols at public places. He had mentioned about the increased surveillance plus self health monitoring.

It is noteworthy that those persons who have travelled to crowded places even within TN must get them tested if they developed symptoms. They must isolate themselves until they have received their report. Testing of contacts must also be carried out without fail.

The health secretary made it clear that the people must be made to wear face masks in crowded places like markets, cinema theatres, malls etc. He then shed light on how the trajectory of cases and the need for hospitalisation must be monitored closely and approved clinical admission and treatment protocols must be followed. To identify the presence of a variant or sub-variant in the positive samples, whole genomic sequencing must be done.

At present, the Coronavirus infection pandemic is under control in Chennai and in TN but it was better to be cautious and well prepared. The important piece of information is that the number of Covid-19 cases in IIT-M has gone to 60. This was brought to light by Mr. M. Subramaniam, health minister. From as many as 2015 tests, 60 cases were found out and Test positivity rate is 2.98%.
