How many of us remember the last time when the 2 important roads in Chennai like OMR or Old Mahabalipuram Road and ECR or East Coast Road had least traffic?
The sensational piece of information is the least traffic was present yesterday, 22 March 2020, due to Janata Curfew to protect people from Covid-19 issue. It must be taken into note that the toll plazas on the Rajiv Gandhi Salai or IT corridor till Puducherry remained open on Sunday during the Janata Curfew.
Normally, through the toll plazas of IT corridor, over 1 lakh vehicles pass and through the ECR around 10,000 vehicles pass is known. Information is around 13,000 vehicles go through toll plazas of ECR in the weekends.
Tamil Nadu Road Development Company or TNRDC has been managing these 2 important roads like OMR, ECR in Chennai. Some sources belonging to TNRDC had pointed out that their staffs did not come for the work and boom barriers were left open.
Government vehicles have been busy now with the sanitizing work to prevent spreading of Covid-19 and these vehicles were only present on the above said 2 important roads in Chennai yesterday. Toll amount was not collected due to very less number of vehicles. This was according to an official. The truth is residents of Chennai could not recollect such an occasion at any point of time in their lives.
Traffic was minimal at the 48 toll plazas in TN (managed by NHAI) and it is known that atleast 7 lakh paying vehicles pass through these toll plazas.
