Greater Chennai Corporation or GCC was very busy on Sunday, 22 March 2020.
Important information gathered is over 2000 persons who were stranded in Chennai was moved from various parts of Chennai to the 47 shelters of GCC. As many as 50 volunteers and five vehicles transported the stranded persons and homeless persons to the shelters.
It must be noted that The Shelter for Urban Homeless team (under GCC) used these 5 vehicles and 50 volunteers to transport the stranded persons. For the attendees of the patients, there are 13 special shelters available is known.
To help the homeless during Janata Curfew and for providing shelter on other days, the staff advertised the GCC number 1913 and shelter helpline numbers 25303849 and 9445190472.
It was later mentioned by Asha Parek Nandhini, Chennai coordinator that apart from homeless calls were got from Koyambedu bus stand and from other places also. She threw light on how the shelters have people from places like Salem, Arakkonam and Karnataka etc.
The women were asked to stay in the ground floor and men in the first floor and they were tested before taken inside the shelters. As the shelters were full of people in Mandaveli, some homeless persons were taken to community halls.
