Chennai Metro Phase 1 Extension: DPR for Airport to Kilambakkam Submitted

Chennai, [Date]: The Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the Chennai Metro Rail Phase 1 extension from Airport to Kilambakkam Bus Terminal, integrated with an elevated road, has been officially submitted. Thiru. M.A. Siddique, I.A.S., Principal Secretary to Government and Managing Director of Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL), handed over the report to Thiru. Dr. K Gopal, I.A.S., Additional Chief Secretary to Government, Special Initiatives, Government of Tamil Nadu, at the Secretariat, Chennai.

Integrated Metro and Elevated Road Plan

The DPR, previously submitted to the Government of Tamil Nadu (GoTN), was revised following directives to integrate metro rail construction with an elevated road. As per the revised DPR:

  • The Metro corridor is proposed at Level-2 while the elevated road will be at Level-1, ensuring seamless connectivity.
  • Intermediate ramps near Tambaram will facilitate easy access to the Outer Ring Road (ORR).
  • The elevated road will directly land inside Kilambakkam Bus Terminal and includes a provision for future extension to Chengalpattu.

The event was attended by key CMRL officials, including Thiru. T. Archunan, Director (Projects), and Thiru. T. Livingstone Eliazer, Chief General Manager (PP & D), along with other senior officials.

  • Number of Elevated Stations: 13
  • Estimated Completion Cost: Rs 9,335 Crores (including elevated road)
  • Major Locations Covered: Pallavaram, Chrompet, Tambaram, Perungalathur, and Vandalur
  • Key Transport Hubs Connected: Kilambakkam Bus Terminal, Chennai Airport, and Tambaram Railway Station
