Weather Alert: Temperature Surge and Heavy Rain Predicted for Tamil Nadu!

Posted on: 26/Jun/2024 10:00:38 AM

The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) has forecast a change in rainfall patterns across Tamil Nadu in the coming days. Wind patterns over the sea are expected to shift, providing some areas with a brief respite from rainfall.

Temperature and Rainfall Predictions:

Temperature:
Maximum daytime temperatures are anticipated to rise by 2-3 degrees Celsius above normal from June 29.

Rainfall:

Districts in the Western Ghats, including The Nilgiris, Coimbatore, Theni, Tenkasi, Tirunelveli, and Dindigul, are likely to receive heavy to very heavy rain over the next two days.
The rest of the state will experience light to moderate rain with thunderstorms.

Chennai and Surrounding Areas:

The sky will be partly cloudy, with light to moderate rain expected in the evenings or at night for the next three days.

Warnings for Fishermen:

Squally weather with wind speeds of 35-45 km/h, gusting up to 55 km/h, is likely to affect the Gulf of Mannar, the south Tamil Nadu coast, and the Comorin area over the next two days. Fishermen are advised against venturing into the sea and those already out should return to shore promptly.

Rainfall Statistics:

Tamil Nadu has recorded 122% excess rainfall during the southwest monsoon so far, with Virudhunagar district receiving the highest at 75.6 mm (304% more than usual) and Karur at 70 mm.

The RMC clarified that the southwest monsoon is typically less favorable to Tamil Nadu, so even moderate rainfall can be recorded as an excess during this season. For example, Chennai`s average rainfall is 4 cm, so a 2 cm rainfall is considered an excess.
