Construction of a 56-feet deep tunnel beneath the Adyar River is progressing rapidly as part of the Madhavaram-Siruseri metro rail project in Chennai. The Phase 2 metro rail project spans 116.1 km across 3 lines, with the 3rd line from Madhavaram to Sipcot covering 45.4 km. This route includes 28 subway metro stations and 19 elevated line metro stations.
The segment from Greenway Road area to Adyar junction spans 1.23 km, with tunneling operations commencing on February 16, 2023. Two tunneling machines named `Kaveri` and `Adyar` began excavation sequentially, tunneling below DP road and reaching the Adyar river near Thiru-vi-ka bridge. `Kaveri` has successfully crossed the Adyar river and is progressing towards Adyar junction.
Meanwhile, `Adyar`, the second machine, is currently excavating beneath the river and has completed over 65 percent of the distance. Progress is limited to a maximum of 7 meters per day. Chennai Metro Rail Corporation officials stated that `Adyar` is operating at a depth of 17 meters under the river, with an expected arrival at Adyar junction next month.
The tunneling machine `Adyar` is tasked with excavating a total of 1,232 meters of tunnel, with over 750 meters completed to date. Authorities anticipate the machine`s completion of the Adyar river crossing by month`s end.
