The famous annual Chithirai festival grandly celebrated in Madurai Meenakshi Amman temple commenced on Friday, 28th April with the divine flag hoisting ceremony. The most important event of the festival, the divine wedding of Lord Sundareswarar with Goddess Meenakshi is scheduled on 7th May.
Chithirai festival is a hugely popular annual event performed in a grand manner. This Madurai Meenakshi Amman Chithirai Festival commenced on Friday, 28th April morning at 9.30 AM with the divine flag hoisting ceremony.
The flag pole had been decorated and adorned and deeparadhana was performed on the flag pole. Then, the divine flag was hoisted in a grand manner.
Following the divine flag hoisting, the procession of Lord Sundareswarar in the divine carriage of Karpaga Viruksham (Divine tree) and Goddess Meenakshi in the divine carriage of Simha Vahanam (Sacred Lion) on the streets was conducted.
On the occasion of the grand Chithirai Festival, the daily procession of the Goddess Meenakshi, Lord Sundareswarar, and Panchmurthys will be performed both in the mornings and evenings.
A sacred Pattabhishekham (The crowning ceremony) will be performed on the deity of Goddess Meenakshi on the 5th May night. The deity of Goddess Meenakshi will be decked with the sacred crown and Senol (Rod symbolizing administration and ruling power) will be placed on the deity.
The event of Digvijayam (The scared arrival) will be performed on 6th May.
The most important part of the grand long festival, the divine wedding of Lord Sundareswarar with Goddess Meenakshi will be performed between 8.35 AM to 8.59 AM.
The divine Chariot procession of Goddess Meenakshi is scheduled at 6.00 AM on 8th May.
