The Greater Chennai Corporation or GCC is now taking huge efforts to make the lives happy and safe for the women residents. It is learnt that these changes would be part of a project by the Gender and Policy Lab of the GCC that is aimed at making Chennai safe for women.
In the near future, the MTC bus stops and other public places in the city would become safe for women. In this aspect, GCC is having plans to construct new bus stops in those places where new ones are required and renovate the older bus stops.
Lighting would be improved around the bus stops and pedestrian access would be enhanced. Infrastructure would be made accessible for differently able persons also. It is learnt that the project would be based on a 6 month study that began in March 2024. The official report is not yet released by the GCC has been making some changes already.
What was the study about?
As per the study, infrastructure at 250 locations and 500 bus stops on 10 most frequented routes by 30 lakhs women every month was examined. Information collected is that several routes that were examined in the study were 17 D (Koyambedu to Broadway), 102K (Kannagi Nagar to Broadway), 119 (Guindy to Semmancheri) and 159A (MGR Nagar to Thiruvottiyur). During the night and evening hours, a 50m radius around each bus stop was studied. The objective was to improve lightning facilities and address the dead spaces behind each bus stop. It is now brought out that the outcome of the study would result in enhanced pedestrian pathways, improved toilets and junctions and better last mile infrastructure.
It was later pointed out by Mr. Prasanna Gettu, co-founder of PCVC that improved lightning and ensuring sustainable maintenance plan for the bus stops would be important for the women`s safety
