The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) in Chennai has issued an orange alert for Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, and Chengalpattu districts, forecasting continued heavy rainfall over the next few hours. A low-pressure area, which formed over the southwest Bay of Bengal on Monday, has moved westward and currently lies over the southwest and west-central Bay of Bengal, near north Tamil Nadu and south Andhra Pradesh coasts. This system is expected to bring intense rain across the alerted districts. Villupuram, Vellore, and Ranipet districts have also been warned of heavy rainfall.

In the past 24 hours, the highest rainfall in Chennai was recorded in Madipakkam at 66.6 mm, with other areas in the city reporting between 15 and 64 mm. Neighborhoods like Royapuram, Velachery, Ekkatuthangal, Tondiarpet, Ambattur, Mylapore, Alandur, Guindy, and OMR have experienced heavy rains since last night, resulting in waterlogging on many streets and main roads. Southern parts of Chennai recorded significant rainfall: Alandur received 51 mm, Adyar 50 mm, Uthandi 45 mm, and Perungudi and Meenambakkam 42 mm each.

The Greater Chennai Corporation has intensified efforts to pump out stagnant water, operating around the clock to prevent further accumulation, particularly in heavily affected areas. Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin visited the Corporation’s operational control center this morning to review ongoing rain-related operations. He monitored live updates from zonal operations, focusing on low-lying areas and tunnels, and reviewed calls to the Help Desk, which is addressing public concerns related to the weather.
