Newly-crowned world chess champion D Gukesh received a grand reception as he returned to Chennai on Monday. Hundreds of enthusiastic fans, along with officials from the Tamil Nadu government and the national chess federation, gathered at the airport to celebrate the 18-year-old’s historic achievement.

Gukesh clinched the world title in Singapore last week by defeating China’s Ding Liren 7.5-6.5, becoming the youngest world champion in chess history. He broke the long-standing record held by Russia’s Garry Kasparov, a milestone celebrated globally.

Speaking to the media amidst cheers from the crowd, Gukesh expressed his gratitude: “It’s an amazing feeling. Your support gave me a lot of energy. Winning the world championship is a dream come true.”

Gukesh is now only the second Indian, after the legendary Viswanathan Anand, to claim the coveted world chess title. Anand, who played a pivotal role in mentoring Gukesh through his academy in Chennai, lauded the young champion`s remarkable achievement.

This historic moment marks a new chapter for Indian chess, with Gukesh now emerging as a global icon and an inspiration for aspiring players worldwide.
