These days, many people travel in the metro trains as they find it very comfortable and time saving etc.

According to some sources belonging to Chennai Metro Rail Limited or CMRL, starting from the month of April CMRL would stop issuing travel cards or store value cards to the passengers.

It is known that since January CMRL has already discontinued issuing new travel cards in 11 metro stations in Chennai. Since the implementation of NCMC or National Common Mobility Cards in April 2023, CMRL has been thinking about stopping issuing new travel cards. Hence, this is not a recent development. Point to be noted is that multiple deadlines were kept to stop issuing the cards. It was clear from an official from CMRL that since NCMC has picked up pace CMRL would stop issuing new travel cards and top-ups in a few months.

In some select metro stations now, CMRL has stopped issuing travel cards and it would be done in a phased manner at all 41 metro stations in the city. Metro stations present in localities like New Washermanpet, Kaladipet, Shenoy Nagar, Egmore, Kilpauk, OTA-Nanganallur, Meenambakkam, Nandanam, Little Mount, Theradi (Thiruvottiyur) and Thiruvottiyur. As per an official from CMRL, the passengers would be allowed to exhaust the remaining amount in their cards. He added that NCMC would be given to those passengers who return their travel cards. He concluded that the remaining balance amount would be refunded but no manual refund would be done.
