It has taken a year now for the Chennai metro train ridership to come close to that witnessed in the pre-Covid days!!

On Monday, 8th March 2021, more than 1lakh passengers used metro trains in Chennai. It is important to mention here that there were no free rides on 8th March plus other modes of transport were also available. Across its 39 metro stations in Chennai, as many as 100,942 passengers travelled by metro trains on Monday. This was brought out by a tweet from CMRL.

It is clear that 14% passengers or 14236 persons used the 9 metro stations on the recently opened north Chennai based Washermanpet- Wimco Nagar line.

Various reasons for the increase in the metro train patronage are slashing of the ticket prices, people returning to their offices plus increase in the domestic fliers and opening of the 9km north Chennai line. This was brought to light by the officials of CMRL.  It is worthy to note that the daily average metro train patronage in March was 1.16 lakhs.

In a month or two when the lockdown restrictions get relaxed further, the patronage would touch pre-Covid levels. This was according to an officer belonging to the CMRL.
