From today around 850 tankers will go on strike because a village panchayat refused to let water tankers to draw underground water from areas such as Navalur and Ponmar in Kancheepuram district. The strike is expected to hit supply to areas like OMR, Velacherry, Madipakkam where residents depend on tanker water as groundwater levels have dipped.
More than 72,000 litres of water is collected daily from borewells in Kancheepuram district. Landowners in villages in the district have dug borewells and allow tankers to collect water. However, the panchayat refused to permit water tankers, claiming that extraction was depleting groundwater. The panchayat head and villagers in several parts of Kancheepuram complained that the groundwater level had gone down by more than 100ft.
