The central government has informed that there is a shortage of 12 Lakhs houses in the major cities & their suburbs in Tamil Nadu.
The central minister, Mr. Venkaiah Naidu, informed in the parliament that department of housing and the department for eradication of poverty in urban areas are having discussions with shareholders.
Technical committee has informed that the shortage of dwelling sin urban areas is 1.187 Crores.
So far, 2,20,741 dwelling have been constructed and given with the combined efforts of Jawaharlal Nehru Urban development mission, Rajiv Gandhi Housing Plans, Cooperative low-price housing system
The state of Uttar Pradesh has the highest shortage in dwellings – 30 Lakhs. Maharashtra – 19, West Bengal – 13, Andhra Pradesh (before bifurcations) – 12, Tamil Nadu – 12, Bihar -12, Rajasthan – 11, Karnataka – 10 Lakhs, Gujarat – 9, and Jharkhand – 6 (all figures in Lakhs) follow.
Around 70.63% of the urban dwellings have the facility for drinking water either inside or nearby. 20.64% get water from bore wells or hand-pumps.
