Ahead of Diwali next week, the Tamilnadu Fire and Rescue Services (TNFRS) department has identified 53 locations in and around the city, including this neighborhood, as being vulnerable to fire accidents.
About 15 fire tenders requisitioned from other districts will be positioned along with 50 Metrowater tanker lorries in some of these areas, including T. Nagar Bus Terminus, MGR Nagar (Nesapakkam) and Dr Ambedkar Salai (Ashok Nagar) in this neighborhood.
About 200 firemen from firestations outside Chennai will also be deployed.
An official said that they have already conducted mock exercises to assess the response time and have made improvements to the system.
Rallies have been conducted with the help of student volunteers to create awareness.
Pamphlets have also been distributed to shop owners ands hoppers to create awareness.Fire fighters will be equipped with smaller vehicles to pumpwater and four bikes to gain access to the spot of a fire in congested areas, narrow alleys and slums. Motorcycle-bore firemen will carry firefighting equipment in their backpacks. The 24-hour fire service helpline numbers are 101 and 102.
