Railway officials including the station manager and Railway Protection Force (RPF) personnel conducted another drive on Monday at the Chennai Central station premises in the awareness campaign to prevent passengers from carrying fire-crackers on trains during the Deepavali season rush.
Station Manager Govindasamy said that passengers caught carrying crackers would be fined Rs 1000 or face imprisonment up to three years. "Carrying explosive/inflammable items jeopardizes the safety of everyone. We want to prevent this, hence this campaign has been carried out," he said.
Another awareness drive was conducted at the Mambalam, Kodambakkam, Saidapet and Nungambakkam stations for around two and a half hours by 15 students of Vivekananda college and five `friends of RPF` members along with the security officials. Announcements were made through the public address system, while staff members held placards holding messages.
RPF officials said that 25 persons had been arrested in the past two weeks for carrying crackers in station premises or trains across stations in Chennai division.
