The state electricity regulation board as scheduled a discussion tomorrow (Tuesday, 13th January) to decide whether to stop the current system of power cut imposition in districts other than Chennai or whether to impose power cuts to all districts including Chennai.

Currently, power cut imposition is carried out depending on the situation and available power. However, power cuts are not imposed in Chennai district. Other districts are imposed with up to 8 hours of power cut every day.

Whenever, there is a severe shortage in power generation, a 1-hour power-cut is imposed in Chennai city. This is strongly protested by the industrialists and the consumers from other districts.

With the summer set to start from February, the demand for power will increase and there may be shortage of power.  This situation can be countered only by imposing power cuts.

The meeting scheduled on 13th January will discuss whether to continue with the current approach.  During the meeting/discussions, the petitions submitted by TNEB, Tamil Nadu Electricity Consumers’ Association, and Coimbatore small-scale Entrepreneurs’ Association will be taken up for hearing.
