The numbers of some of the MTC bus routes in Chennai have been changed.
In the 1st phase, the change in route number was carried out for 15 routes. MTC operates 3521 buses in Chennai city in 806 routes with 27 service workshops. 51,84,000 passengers travel daily.A daily revenues of Rs. 3.34 Crores is earned by MTC on a daily basis.
Since buses of totally different numbers were operating on similar routes, there were some confusions regarding the bus numbers & their routes.
Change of number for 15 routes:
In the 1st phase, the numbers of 15 routes have been changed on a test basis.
- Buses plying on OMR have been given number 102.
- Buses plying on East Coast Road, number 109 have been introduced.
- The buses plying in Adyar, Besant Nagar, and Thiruvanmiyur will start with the number ‘9’.
- 21H, plying between Broadway- Kelambakkam – 102
- H21 – Broadway – Semmanchery – 102C
- T51 –Thiruvanmiyur-East Tambaram- 95.
- 70 – Aavadi – Tambaram – 77
- 17 – Broadway – Ayyappanthangal – 26
- D51 – 91C
Stickers containing both the old & new numbers have been pasted in the front & back of all buses. Announcements are mad through loudspeakers in some bus stops (especially in Adyar, Thiruvanmiyur, East Tambaram).

The public can easily learn and remember the new numbering pattern.Based on the public responses, further changes on bus route numbers will be carried out.
