There has developed a huge demand for urad dal and toor dal in ration shops in the recent days. Owing to this demand, women complaint that they are forced to buy these pulses for triple the price in outside shops.

The demand:
Over 1.92 crore ration cards are currently in use in Tamil Nadu. For these cards, pulses like urad dal, toor dal, palm oil, etc are provided for subsidized prices. 1 kg of urad and toor dal are priced Rs 30 each. This creates a demand of 7000 tonne of urad dall out of which only 490 tonne is being received. And out of 13460 tonne requirement with toor dal, only 260 tonne is being received. Owing to this lesser quantity of deliveries, there has emerged a huge demand and crisis for these pulses.

People belonging to poor backgrounds are hugely irked due to this crisis situation as they now pay Rs 100 to Rs 120 in outside shops. Speaking to one of the customers in Chintadripet ration shop, she says she couldn’t get urad or toor dal in the ration shop for the past two months. Shopkeepers here say they didn’t receive the stock. I’m to pay extra seventy rupees for using these pulses for cooking, she says.
