The Kandaleru Poondi Canal is getting a much needed makeover. The canal transports water from the river Krishna from Andhra Pradesh, all the way to Chennai. The repair work will make the water flow faster and prevent silt build up.
Repair work has started in the stretch between Uthukottai and the Poondi reservoir. Workers from the Water Resources Department have been on the job for two months now. Say officials, `The concrete lining on the retaining wall is being rebuilt in the portion under the Rs. 20-crore project. As of now, about 50 per cent of the project funded by NABARD has been completed. The work will be over in three months. We plan to take up work in the remaining portion of the canal in the second phase of the project. We have received 2.55 thousand million cubic feet of water between January and July this year. This is equal to three months of city water supply. Once the reservoirs have better inflows, we expect to get water into the canal. However, the water flow in the canal will not affect the ongoing work.`
