Storm water drains are need to transport rain water from the roads and living surroundings to lakes and tanks. The drains are meant to keep stagnation of water away from towns. However, they are draining sewage into lakes and tanks instead. This has been prominent in Chennai`s southern suburbs. Any delay in completing work on these drains is very troublesome. The very young and the very old are the ones to suffer the most.

According to an official, `There is the network of drains that have been emptying sewage into Chitlapakkam Lake for many years. Water from the railway colony serves as aquifers, but only grey water from homes and shops is released into the lake and the local bodies only end up accelerating this process.`

The Tambaram Municipality started working on a cement concrete pavement and a culvert with a stormwater drain. The work has begun on Anna Street, Periyar Street and Muthumariamman Koil Street. The same work has been started in Rajeshwari Nagar and Dhanalakshmi Streets in Selaiyur. Say officials, `The culvert is essential to channelise rainwater into the drains as part of flood-prevention measures.`
