Onion prices have now reached Rs. 70 per kg. Wholesale prices for the vegetable from Nashik and other parts of Maharashtra are Rs. 60 per kg. However, customers in Chennai are slightly better off than those in other metros such as Delhi and Mumbai as they also get their onions from Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka.

Even so, the Andhra Pradesh onions are also high at Rs. 40 per kg. This is attributed to the demand for the vegetable from other States. According to a wholesale seller from Koyambedu, the hike in prices is due to the reduction of onion crops and the lack of rains this year. Small onions are sold at Rs. 30 per kg and is, therefore, preferred by customers at this point.

Onions available in Chennai are also brought in from areas such as Trichy, Theni and Dindigul. `We get only 50 truckloads, mostly from neighboring States`, says a wholesale trader.
