In the Tamil Nadu Assembly, Highways Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami announced several initiatives that would improve the State Highways and District roads in the State. The Minister has also set aside funds for a road that will link East Coast Road (ECR) and Old Mahabalipuram Road (OMR) through Neelankarai.

Speaking to the Assembly, Mr. Palaniswami said, `A 2km road to link the two roads and construction of a bridge across Buckingham Canal will be taken up for Rs 204.20 crore. At present there is only one road which links the two roads at Thiruvanmiyur. But there is heavy traffic congestion and the new road will ease the traffic blocks. The government has given its approval for these roads and work has already commenced in Kolathur. At Velachery, tenders have been floated and work will commence after the contractor is finalized. The Tirumangalam rail over-bridge will be completed by the year-end... In the last four years, the minister said, 87 bypass road works have been taken up across the state. "Of this, 29 are complete. Land acquisition is underway for 34 bypass roads and work is being sped up for five roads. The road from Muthayarchathiram in Rameswaram and Dhanushkodi was washed away in the 1964 flood. Now this road measuring 9.4km is being laid at a cost of Rs 62 crore. Once completed, tourists can visit Indo-Sri Lanka sea border.`
