The link canal that transfers water from the River Krishna and the Poondi and Chembarambakkam reservoirs has been damaged in the recent floods. The concrete singing of the canal has been ripped apart. It is believed that the increased quantity of water flowing in the canal, coupled with the heavy rain has caused the damage.
Maintenance and repair work was done on the canal just under a year ago. Now, the Water Resources Department (WRD) will start repair work on all channels that were damaged during the floods. Officials from the department are awaiting funds to start the repair work.
The WRD is also intensifying its drive to remove encroachments along the Adyar river in the city. It has started to retrieve land that obstructed flow of water neat Nandambakkam bridge in Manapakkam. (We) started the work in Nandambakkam based on the report of special monitoring officer of the State government. Once the work is completed, the width of the river will increase to 100 metres from the existing 80 metres, they said.
