A new app for faster police verification to issue passports is being developed by the Regional Passport Office in Chennai. The app will use the Crime and Criminal Tracking Network System or the CCTNS to track the applicants antecedents. Recently, a Bengaluru based NGO had released the Jana Mahiti Report 2016, in which it said that Rs. 38.18 lakh was paid as bribes to policemen across the country between 2010 and 2014 for passport verification.

Speaking about the app, officials said, There are some glitches between the RPO and the Tamil Nadu police department that are being ironed out. (It is) in the conceptual stage. The modalities are being worked out and we have data which can be shared. A number of measures (have) been introduced to reduce the time taken to process and issue passports to applicants as part of the Centre`s re-engineering of e-governance.

It is believed that all police station across the State will need to have a digital database of crimes and criminals. This database will be shared on the CCTNS.
