Fruits with more water content or protein are always on high demand. When it is summer, the demand is naturally higher than other times. Now, summer season is at its peak and hence people show more interest towards buying fruits and this has naturally resulted in price hike. Pomegranate, sweet lime, orange, pine apple, mango, water melon, etc are hiked by Rs 20 per kg. One kg of watermelon was Rs 10 last year, whereas it has got hiked to Rs 25 this year. Mango is sold for rate up to Rs 60 per kg.

Mango is among the most preferred fruits. As there was severe heat during flower season, much of these mango flowers fell off and has resulted in deficient situation. This is a major reason for the price hike of mangoes.

In general, mango production is comparatively less in Tamil Nadu unlike other states. The state receives mango loads from nearby states like Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Maharashtra, etc. Due to draught situation this year, there is dip in mango production by 20 percent.
