An information was released that the food department has insisted that Aadhar card copy must be brought to the ration shops from 1st June. It added that food items will not be sold if Aadhar card was not shown.

However, the Food Department officials have denied this.A brief on the information as given by them:

No orders have been given to any ration shop to insist on showing Aadhar cards. The sales of food items have no connection with Aadhar card or its copy. The public can buy the items, as usual.

However, when applications are given for transfer to another PDS centre, change of address, and the addition or removal of names, copies of Aadhar cards of all family members is required.

The receipt of a copy of Aadhar card will simplify the process when smart cards are planned to be distributed in the near future.

Some public have already given their Aadhar card number and cell phone number in a few areas. These are required for the manufacture of smart cards.

Minister R Kamaraj, Minister for Food, has also confirmed that there is no connection between copies of Aadhar card and distribution of food items.
