Drinking water shortage likely in Chennai

One of the major sources for drinking water in Chennai is Poondi reservoir. This has a total capacity of 35 feet. At present, it has just 26.14 feet of water and has no source of water to it.

Over 15 cubic feet of water is being released to the Puzhal Lake to meet the drinking water needs of Chennaites. As the water level is getting drastically reduced, it is likely that Chennai may experience water shortage.

According to the Krishna Water Distribution scheme, Poondi reservoir will receive 4 TMC water between July and October and 8 TMC water between January and April from the Kandalery Dam.

Drinking water needs in Chennai can be fulfilled only if Krishna river water is released.
