Construction of a 1.14 km flyover on Jawaharlal Nehru Salai at Kaliamman Koil Junction which will take over 70 percent of the traffic on the road is set to begin soon. The second pile test for this construction work got completed successfully. By next week, the 4-lane bidirectional flyover at a cost of Rs 93.50 crore is set to begin. This work was hindered as the Assembly elections took place recently.

According to the Highways Department sources, the traffic police had recently given nod to cordon off lanes in the road alongside the median.

Sources said that they have successfully completed a three day trial run. To start with, a 200m stretch will get cordoned off for constructing 40 span flyover which is set to come live in another 33 months. Once this flyover comes to use, there will be significant reduction in congestion on this road, at CMBT bus terminus entrance at Koyambedu and Kaliamman Koil Junction.

It is definitely a welcome move, but it is important that the work gets completed on time as per plans, said one of the residents in Virugambakkam. Further, the Porur flyover work is shelved and remains incomplete leading to severe traffic, she pointed. Likewise, works to widen Kaliamman Koil Street has to take place at the earliest, she added.
