Price of tomato drops to Rs. 20/- per kg

As more quantity of tomato reached Koyambedu wholesale vegetable market, its price went down to Rs. 20/- per kg.

The Chennai Koyambedu wholesale vegetable market receives large quantities of tomato from Ottiyappalli, Madanapalli, Punganur, Kuppam, Palamaner of Andhra State and Kolar, Srinivasapuram, Sithamani from Karnataka State.

The price of tomato has been falling at the rate of Rs. 10/- per kg since February. This lasted till the 2nd week of April.

However, since the start of summer, the quantity of tomato arriving at Koyambedu reduced and so, the price went up gradually. The price touched Rs. 100/- per kg in the open retail market.

As the central government intervened, taking remedial action and the growth of tomato improved in Andhra and Karnataka, the price of tomato started coming down from 15th July.

As per yesterday the price of tomato in the Kopyambedu market was Rs. 20/- per kg, in the Jam Bazaar Market, it was Rs. 30/- per kg. In the farm green shops, it was sold at Rs. 22/- per kg.

When enquiring about this, the President of the Koyambedu Market tomato traders’ Association, M. Thyagarajan, explained that usually, 80 truckloads of tomato arrive in Koyambedu market. During last month,the arrival reduced to only 32 trucks. So, the price of tomato went up to Rs. 70/- per kg.

As on yesterday, the number of trucks increased to 68. Thus, with more quantity arriving, the price of tomato reduced to Rs. 20/- per kg.
