With more quantity of tomatoes arriving from the states of Andhra and Karnataka, the price has started falling. In the Koyambedu wholesale vegetable market, the tomato is sold at Rs. 7/- per kg.
In India, Andhra is the state with the maximum production share of tomato at 35 percent. Karnataka is in the 2nd place at 10.44 percent. Tamil Nadu is in the 9th place with a production share of 3.45 percent. So, the additional demand in Tamil Nadu is served by the states of Andhra and Karnataka, So, whenever production of tomato falls in these 2 states, the price of tomato goes up in Tamil Nadu and if production is up, the price of tomato goes down in Tamil Nadu.
With the increased quantity arriving in Tamil Nadu, the tomato is sold at Rs. 7/- per kg in Koyambedu market.
Farm Green shops, Jam Bazaar market, and Vyasarpadi market sell tomato at Rs. 10/- per kg.
It is interesting to note that on the very same date last year, the price of tomato was Rs. 7/- per kg.
Mr. M. Thyagarajan, the president of the Kyambedu tomato traders association, informed that as monsoon rains had failed in the states of Andhra and Karnataka had failed during the last April and May, the farmers avoided growing tomatoes. So, the production came down. At that time, the tomato was sold in Tamil Nadu at an unprecedented price of up to Rs. 80/- per kg in the wholesale market and up to Rs. 100/- per kg in the retail market.
With the arrival of increased quantities, the price of tomato has come down. For the last few months, only 32 load trucks delivered tomato daily. However, as on yesterday, 80 load trucks had delivered tomato in the Koyambedu wholesale vegetable market.
