Reserve Bank of India who learnt a lesson from the recent train heist has now decided to transport currency in a special train called RBI Special which was done some 10 years back. Thieves broke open the roof of a parcel van attached to the Salem-Chennai Express and stole Rs. 5.78 crore cash, which was part of a consignment of soiled currency being transported by the Reserve Bank of India for destruction.

This has created great sensation in Tamil Nadu. On the complaint received by the RBI, the Railway Protection Force has registered a case and is investigating it.

In order to prevent such kind of incidents, the railways and RBI officials are holding consultation meeting regarding the precautionary measures. An official of the RBI said: Last 10 years back, a special RBI train was being operated to transport currency notes. There will be only four coaches. There will be armed policemen in the front and behind of each coach. The train will not stop anywhere. Even if the train stops for signal, the police will be alert and alight the train and guard the coaches. No one will dare to go near the coach. Such kind of incidents has never taken place when the currency was transported in a separate train. Now this incident has taught a big lesson to RBI and Railways. Though it is expensive to operate a separate train, it is still safer method. Now RBI will go back to the old practice.
