The prices of tomatoes are going down day by day in Chennai. Four months back tomatoes were sold for Rs 100 per kilo. Since the prices were high, the farmers started harvesting more tomatoes. This resulted in heavy inflow of tomatoes in the market.
Tomatoes are brought to Koyambedu Wholesale Market from Hosur, Krishnagiri, Ottanchattiram, Dindigul, Periyapalayam and Tiruvannamalai. Apart from this loads and loads of tomatoes are brought from Andhra and Karnataka. Because of this one kilo of tomatoes is sold for Rs 7 at vegetable retail market.
V R Soundara Rajan, advisor, Tamilnadu Vegetable Merchant Association, said: Since there is more supply of tomatoes, the takers are less. Hence we are selling at low price. Because of this price downslide, the farmers are not getting their profits. Farmers are incurring heavy losses. The merchants buy tomatoes from farmers at 50 paise per kilo. After including the labour and transport charges they sell at Rs 7 per kilo. It is a great shock because the prices of tomatoes have come down.
