Special buses were operated from 4 bus terminus during Deepavali festival. Similarly special buses for Pongal festival will be operated from 4 bus terminuses. Transport officials have mentioned that the announcement regarding Pongal special buses will be made in a week’s time.
In view of the traffic congestions during the festive seasons special buses were operated for Deepavali from various terminuses in Chennai. For convenience of people, special buses were operated from MTC Bus Stand in Anna Nagar (West), State Election Commission bus stop opposite CMBT on 100 ft road, Arignar Anna Bus Stand, Tambaram-Sanatorium (MEPZ) and Poonamallee Bus Stand in Poonamallee. Because of this there was no traffic strangulation in Chennai and its suburbs. There was a good response amongst the people for this new scheme.
At this juncture Hon’ble Minister for Transport M R Vijayabhaskar chaired a meeting in connection with operating special buses for Pongal festival. Managing directors of the Eight State transport corporations were present in this meeting. Discussions regarding operating of special buses for Pongal, changes in traffic and functions of the transport corporations took place.
An official of the State transport corporation said: For the convenience of the passengers Deepavali special buses were operated from 5 terminuses including Koyambedu. It has been decided to operate special buses for Pongal in the similar manner. 12624 special buses were operated during last Pongal festival. Sufficient buses will be operated for this Pongal also. Announcement regarding special buses and special counters will be made in a week’s time.
