The prices of rice have gone up due to severe drought in Tamil Nadu. One kilo of rice is sold for Rs 56. Since the northeast monsoon failed, the harvests in the delta districts were deeply affected. The same situation prevailed in other areas resulting in the crops getting scorched.

Due to this a kilo of rice which was sold for Rs 47 in 2016 at the wholesale market has now increased by 19 percent. Similarly the sugar which was sold for Rs 31 per kilo has now increased by 39 percent and is being sold for Rs 43. The price of 15 kilos ghee is now sold for Rs 6500. Similarly the prices of cashew nut and pepper have gone up.
