Tamil Nadu replaces ration cards with smart family cards

The new smart cards in place of the old ration cards were distributed in all the districts of Tamil Nadu except Chennai district yesterday (Saturday, 1st April).
With the introduction of the smart card, fake ration cards will be totally eliminated and prevented. This will also help in preventing the various misdeeds committed in the ration shops.
The new rations card the latest evolution after the introduction ration cards a few decades ago.
There are 20364386 family cards in the state of Tamil Nadu.
There are 19153352 green coloured ration family cards issued especially for the public belonging to the common category as low-income groups.
Khaki coloured ration cards, used by the police personnel are 66478.
There are 65000 white ration family cards which indicate that the holder does not require any items sold in the ration shops.
The state government commenced the major task of converting all these different family ration cards into smart cards and now, they are being distributed. Rs. 318 Crores have been allotted for this task.
The state government has informed that it intends to distribute 5 lakh smart cards every day. On the first day of the smart card distribution on Saturday, 1st April, 15 lakhs smart cards have been issued.
SMS will be sent to the cell phone number given by the card holder. The person can then visit the specified venue and get the electronic smart card.
Any correction activity, such as the inclusion of names, correction of the names, removal of names, etc. can be done either online or the government e-service centres.
The main objective of the introduction of the electronic family smart ration cards is to prevent all the misdeeds prevalent in ration shops and also the elimination of issue of fake ration cards.
As Aadhar card details are linked to the smart card, it will not be possible to add bogus names in the list of members.
Please note that those who need fresh family cards need to apply online only. Once the field inspection is carried out, the new cards will be ready for the issue within 7 days.
