2000 bus services withdrawn to reduce loss to resume services in summer vacation

The Department of Transport has informed that around 2000 buses, whose services had been withdrawn to reduce the losses of the department, will be resumed gradually from 10th April.

23400 buses are being operated daily by the various Tamil Nadu state government Transport Corporations.

However, the department has been facing severe losses due to various reasons including frequent price increase of diesel, the price increase in spares, etc. Also the state government does not provide the required funds for the transport department. So the buses are being operated without proper maintenance.

The department is not in a position to pay the retirement benefits to the retired employees. The transport corporations combined together incur a daily loss of Rs. 5 Crores. Currently the transport department has the debt burden of Rs.35000 Crores.

In this position, the department is taking all necessary steps to reduce additional and wasteful expenses. As per this 2000 buses with insufficient passengers in trips were selected and withdrawn from services.

The officials of the transport department explained that several steps are taken to reduce the losses. 2000 buses were withdrawn due to insufficient patronage. This was done in January 2017.

However, since summer vacation has started, there will be a spurt in the number of passengers planning trips to their native places. Hence it has been decided to restore these services in a gradual manner depending on the demand and this has been ordered to the branch managers.
