The official announcement of the district collector of Chennai, V. Anbuselvan orders the TASMAC bars and shops to be closed for three days in the month of January.

January 15, 26 and 31 are the dates which are announced for the closing of the Government run shops of liquor, directed to the Thiruvalluvar day, Republic day and the Vallalar Ninaivu Naal respectively.

The Collector’s statements clearly says the violation of this announcement will face strict action against the shops that fails to follow the directed orders.

Also the Greater Chennai Corporation ordered a closure of meat shops on Thiruvalluvar Day refraining the city from slaughtering animals. This rule will also applicable for the supermarkets and the commercial complexes selling processed meats.

This rule of the government is highly criticized as it indirectly violates the freedom of food selection and cultural traditions by the general public. So many meat associations are going to open their shops on the Thiruvalluvar day defying the governor’s order which is the sole reason for the state’s ban on meat selling on Thiruvalluvar day.
