Giving due consideration to the present population of the Chennai Metro City, the state government of Tamil Nadu has been exploring the possibility of setting up a satellite city near Chennai. The satellite city will have all the latest facilities and it is proposed to be set up in Chengalpattu. It has been decided to set up the satellite city covering an area of 500 to 1000 hectares.

The state government has asked for the opinions/suggestions on this proposal to the CMDA (Chennai Metro Development Authority).  The official circles inform that the state government had also requested for the draft map on this proposal.

As per this plan, the new satellite city will serve as the branch city of Chennai. It will also help in the development of the rural/village residents. So, the cooperation from this local farmers and land-owners will be solicited in this regard.

So, consultations are being conducted as to procure the proposed land from the farmers as well as the land-owners. As per this, alternative jobs have to be provided to these present owners as well as the provision of government jobs for their heirs. The officials have decided to offer the suitable price for the lands to be acquired.

Though the plan is to set up the satellite city covering an area of 1000 hectares, the 1st Phase may be taken up to set up the city in an area of 500 hectares. This will also help improve the economic/financial status of the rural residents. It will further help in relieving the excess population problem experienced in Chennai Metro city.

It is planned to provide the latest facilities for the future residents including the provision of the latest communication systems, education, medical help, and the new industries. Lands will be located and acquired on this basis.

CMDA will conduct a thorough survey and study regarding this proposal and inform the state government. Subsequently, the state government will take a final decision on the setting up of a satellite city.
