Soon, you will get guidance from humanoid robots at Chennai Airport. This will be possible as a first-of-its-kind initiative is being taken by the airport authority to deploy humanoid robots for passenger help.

To start with, the Chennai airport will have these robots in the count one at each domestic arrival, international departure and domestic departure terminals.

According to the Airports Authority of India, talks are on the go with a few Indian companies for buying these robots in another few months.

As these companies get back for the next session of talks, specifications shall be asked for. Only then the exact period of installing these humanoids will be intimated. The installation will be done as a pilot project to know how useful and easy it is. If humanoids can impress passengers, more of them will be installed. Furthermore, officials state that there is no clue as to what the estimated budget for these three robots is.

How can the robots help? They can help you with a lot of information including

  • Flight status
  • Addressing enquiries about flight information
  • Way to board
  • Which gate to enter for boarding, etc.

No decision is still been taken as to whether the robot should be assigned a specific place or available mobile in their respective terminal. This will be decided upon considering the security aspect.

To note, there are humanoid robots under testing at airports like Munich, Germany. Considering India, the other airports that have shown interest towards deploying these robots include Delhi and Bengaluru and now it is followed by Chennai.

In Delhi airport, a robot named RADA was recently announced. This is out of an association between Tata-Singapore joint venture.
