At a cost of Rs 32 lakh, the Greater Chennai Corporation is set to develop vertical garden on piers of GN Chetty Road flyover, T. Nagar. The Chennai Smart City had recently approved the proposal for the same.

Corporation documents read that the initiative for setting up vertical gardens follows their decision to prevent the piers from getting hit with bad elements like sticking posters at night. The flyover will get embellished with the vertical gardens. So, the space around the piers will be effectively utilized.

With the vertical gardens, the carbon footprint would come down in large amounts as all pollutants and CO2 will get absorbed. In Indian cities like Bengaluru, such vertical gardens are already existing, say officials.

The GN Chetty Road flyover was constructed in 2009. It has 11 sans and there are 20 piers with 2 abetments. Of these, around 8 piers, the vertical gardens will be set up on 3,760 sq.ft. The overall estimate is Rs 750 per square foot. To set up infrastructure such as pump room, storage sump, electricity, borewell, etc., an extra of Rs 3.80 lakh will have to be additionally spent.

This garden will have a base of steel frame surrounding the piers. This will make sure that there is good floral growth and the main structure would also not get affected. Only a very few agencies have indulged in this kind of work. And only a few of them have experience in this niche. Once a firm is finalized, it shall keep maintaining the garden for 3 months. From there on, maintenance works such as watering, medication, manuring, pruning, etc. shall be done continuously. For this, the pricing will be Rs 30,000 per month.
