There are about 20 toll plazas which are under the control of NHAI or National Highways Authority of India. The information got is the toll rates at these 20 toll plazas would be revised in TN beginning from the 1st of April 2019. The wholesale price index has been used as model for this annual revision of toll rates.

Point is it is calculated using a rule that was enforced in the year 2008. According to some sources belonging to NHAI, the revised rates would be nominal and would not even constitute a 2 percent increase in most cases. It has been brought out that there would be some increase in the monthly pass rates also. An official spoke about how in cases where widening of roads is happening, the rates are yet to be finalized and would come into force along with other toll plazas on the appointed date. From 1st September 2019, the rates of other toll plazas would be revised.

The important point here is the calculation would be based on the rule that came into existence in the year 1997. Revision of toll rates would start at plazas like Athur, Boothakudi, Chennasamudram, Krishnagiri, Vaigaikulam, Paranur, Vanur, Sriperumbidur, Vanniyambadi and Surapattu etc.

It must be noted that waiting time at the toll plazas would be cut down if more number of motorists opt for RFID cards. Under the control of NHAI in the state of TN, there are as many as 43 toll plazas. Those toll plazas on the Chennai bypass at places like Surapet and Vanagram are the oldest and tolling started in the month of June in 2003. Toll plazas and RTO checks on the roads have been creating issues for the transporters, impeding the movement of the vehicles etc. This was as per Mr. P.V. Subramani who is the vice-president (south), All India Motor Transport Congress.

It is now revealed that the movement of the vehicles have come down after the implementation of GST plus due to forthcoming elections and financial year end etc. As a result now there are not many traffic jams present.
