Now IIT Madras has joined hands with GE and has set up a laboratory. The main aim of this lab is to develop advanced technology for aircraft engine components.

It must be noted that this lab is equipped with state-of-art facilities. The ‘cold spray’ SMART (Surface Modification and Additive Research Technologies) is very unique in the fact that it is the first of its kind high pressure cold spray facility in an academic institute in India. This laboratory has been commissioned by none other than Mr. Bhaskar Ramamurthy who is the director of IITM.

The director expressed his thoughts regarding this lab and spoke about how the project was funded under Uchhatar Avishkar Yojana. This project had many applications and is not just for aviation only and he expected some start-ups to come out this. He spoke about how at present 90 percent of MRO needs of Indian careers are done outside India.

Mr. Alok Nanda explained about how this programme would strengthen MRO ecosystem in India and play an important role in the advanced technology expertise plus promote the skill development of engineers in additive technology. He finally expressed his happiness in joining hands with IIT Madras.
