There has been a delay in the installation of the prepaid electric energy meters due to the financial crisis faced by TANGEDCO.
TANGEDCO distributed electric power in Tamil Nadu State to all residences, shops, trading centres, and factories. The customers pay for the consumption charges. However, certain government departments do not pay the bills regularly. This results in a financial crisis for TANGEDCO.
Software Design :
In order to find a solution to this issue, the central government has issued an order to install pre-paid electric energy meters to all the state governments. In this meter, there is a software feature where a particular extent of electric power will be allowed to be used. Once this limit is exceeded, the power will get cut off automatically. Only if the due charges are paid, the power supply will be resumed.
During the 1st Phase of implementation of this device, TANGEDCO decided last year to use this technique in all the government offices. However, this is yet to be implemented.
Meanwhile, as TANGEDCO is facing an acute financial crisis, there is a situation where the installation of pre-paid electric energy mete4rs had to be stopped. A large amount of several Crores of Rupees had to be spent by TANGEDCO in the restoration work of fallen electric poles during the devastation caused by the cyclone Gaja.
Further, TANGEDCO has been procuring single-phase and 3-phase electric energy meters in order to provide new electric power connections immediately.
TANGEDCO officials informed that once the present financial crisis gets solved, the pre-paid electric energy meters will be installed not only in all the government offices/institutions but also in private connections.
