On Friday evening, Chennai city received rains and it made the residents very happy. It is now said that there would be rains or thundershowers in the Chennai city for the next 24 hours.

Point to be noted here is a weak low pressure area over northwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining Gangetic West Bengal and north Odisha has become less marked. This was according to the Regional Meteorological Centre or RMC. It was later pointed out by Mr. Puviarasan, Area Cyclone Warning Centre, RMC that when the system is not strong then the westerlies would weaken. This would result in easterlies setting by afternoon it would lead to convection.

He added that the westerlies would be strong if the system is strong and there won’t be rise in the temperature. It must be noted that the westerly winds might push some clouds that could bring only drizzles.

Many places in south Chennai such as Nanganallur, Palavanthangal, Tambaram etc received sharp spells of rains around 4 pm in the evening and it quickly spread to other parts. Core Chennai city places like Aminjikarai, Choolaimedu, Nungambakkam and those along OMR received heavy rains that lasted for almost hour.

There were light to intense spells of rains in places like Madhavaram, Ramapuram, Sriperumbudur, Thiruvallur etc. Traffic snarls were present in Koyambedu due to the stagnation of rainwater at this place and it caused issues. Things were not different in the commercial hub T. Nagar and the visitors were seen wading through the rain water present on the roads. Huge number of passengers left Chennai for the weekend and this created issues in the traffic at CMBT.

The movement of many packed buses plus the water stagnation on the road made lives of many motorists difficult. It must be noted that few vehicles broke down in the middle of the road also as the water entered the tail pipes. This also added to the chaos in CMBT.  A resident belonging to Nungambakkam welcomed this rain. He added that any amount of rain is good for the residents of Chennai that has been facing severe water crisis.
