The Open Defecation Free or ODF status of Chennai is under question now

The hygiene of a particular place depends on the people. People could make the place unhygienic by open defecation. It is now revealed that by this unhygienic way the name of the place would get spoilt.

Point to be noted is in the city of Chennai people still do open defecation. It is now said that on the day when Swachh Bharat Mission had announced that TN has 100% ODF or open defecation free there were few people defecating along the Marina.

In January 2018, Tamil Nadu declared Chennai as ODF is known. The important point is there are several holes in the claim and this was as per the experts. People who live close to the railway tracks, corporation dump yards etc defecate in the open.

It was later mentioned by a researcher named Venessa Peter that Chennai is 100% ODF is not a correct statement. Point is anyone who passes by Chintadripet or Adyar River in Saidapet could easily spot this open defecation.

She later revealed that 89% of the homeless used public toilets for washing clothes and for other purposes. It must be noted that the remaining would defecate around lakes, canals, rivers etc as they cannot afford to pay for the public toilets. She shed light on how in various places in Chennai people do not have access to the toilets also.

People were forced to defecate in the open in many core places in Chennai like CIT Nagar, T. Nagar, Mount Road, Egmore, etc. The reason for this was the public toilets in these places were either locked or they were in poor condition. Information is GCC is responsible for maintaining as many as 572 toilets and a private contractor is responsible for maintaining 224 e-toilets in Chennai city. In addition to these toilets, tenders were floated for the construction of 853 more toilets in this financial year.
