Gone are the days when a commuter travelling in MTC bus in Chennai has to depend upon the commuter seated next or conductor to know about the approximate time of reaching his / her destination plus other important details etc.

The superb piece of news now is 50 MTC buses in Chennai have been fitted with GPS based PAS or Public Address System. There are 6 speakers inside the buses and the commuters would know about the names of the approaching stops, destination and approximate time taken to reach the destinations etc by these speakers. It must be taken into account that metro trains also follow the same procedure for providing information to its passengers.

Information collected now is out of 75 systems planned as many as 50 systems were fitted in new red buses plying along the routes 25G, 101 and 570. It is known that buses 25G and 101 ply from Poonamallee to Anna Square and from Poonamallee to Tiruvottriyur respectively. Bus route number 570 is operated between Broadway and Kelambakkam along OMR.

A transport activist Mr. Rengachari spoke about how PAS would be of huge help for the people coming from other cities because the conductor would be busy with his work.

Earlier in this month of December, tenders were floated and the successful bidder was made to fit GPS devices in all these 50 MTC buses. It is superb to note that a system has been developed to make the announcements in Tamil language.

Advertisements of the firm would also be relayed between the announcements and the firm would be paying Rs 1250 per bus every month for this. This was according to tender norms. Information is at present advertisements of 8 different private firms including Vasanth & Co were played between the announcements. It is now revealed that MTC is able to generate an amount of Rs 62,500 a month without huge investment.
