Safety of women has been a cause for concern now with many crimes taking place against women.
Greater Chennai Corporation or GCC has floated tenders to build as many as 150 ‘SHE’ toilets or ‘Women Only’ toilets under Nirbhaya Scheme in Chennai. Point to be noted is this is a move to ensure the safety of women.
It is important to mention that these ‘SHE’ toilets would be built in safe zone clusters or SZC and in busy places earmarked by the civic body through Geographic Information Mapping. There has been a delay of more than one year now due to earmarking spaces. This was according to some officials.
It was later brought out by a top official belonging to the Corporation works department that the places have been finalised now and this would be the first phase. He hinted about the expansion to 500 toilets at a total cost of Rs 27 crores in 2020 in 2 phases and the tender contract that would for 3 years. To promote the safety of women in public places, ‘SHE’ toilets are part of the umbrella project by the government of TN under Nirbhaya Scheme.
Various other projects under this are women-only MTC buses, Amma Patrol cars, surveillance cameras, street lights and mobile apps. The purpose is to make a woman feel safe and comfortable in using public toilets. Official then mentioned about how a dedicated e-toilet for women in busy place would be a welcome change. The perception of public toilets among women would be changed on the whole.
In the future, public toilets for women would be present in places like Parry’s bus stand, Egmore station and Central station etc. It must be noted that ‘SHE’ toilets would be similar to e-toilets in Chennai with more or less similar size and auto-flush connected to a tank on the side or rear of 200 litres capacity.
