Till now, we would have seen men in tricycles finding it difficult to deliver the gas cylinders for the consumers in Chennai. This has often led to slow delivery of the cylinders to the consumers and the delivery men find it laborious. This wouldn’t be there anymore.
The latest news is a gas agency of IOC at Korattur has launched an electric rickshaw or e-rickshaw for delivering gas cylinders for the consumers. It must not be forgotten that last week a direction came from the petroleum ministry and it was decided to replace the tricycles with the environment friendly e-rickshaws.
It was pointed out by Mr. P.G. Krishnamoorthy, director of Ammani Associates and Services India Private Limited, that the gas cylinder deliverymen could drive the battery run electric rickshaws straight from the agency to the houses of the customers. It must be noted that this company is an electric vehicle manufacturer in Chennai.
It is superb to mention that electric rickshaw would be pulled by 1000 watt motors and would cover 70 to 90 m distance and this would be possible after the e-vehicle is charged for 7 to 8 hours. Important information collected is the capacity of the e-vehicle is 400 to 450 kg. As many as 15 gas cylinders could be transported at one go and the design of the electric vehicle is such that it could go through narrow roads less than 15 feet width. The cost for manufacturing electric rickshaws is Rs 1.45 lakhs to Rs 1.6 lakhs and the e-rickshaw weighs 200 kg.
As per Hindustan Petroleum dealer at Ambattur, it is clear that both physical labor as well as the transportation time could become less. He shed light n how till now each worker delivers 25 to 30 cylinders per day and how by using electric rickshaws per day target could be increased and delivery time would be reduced.
Point to be taken into account is there are 200 gas agencies in Chennai and each agency gets 300 to 400 cylinders from several petroleum companies at regular time intervals. This might be in the range of 2 to 7 days depending on the customer base.
It was later revealed by an official data that TN has got 2.4 crore domestic gas connections out of which 1.17 crore customers were supplied Indane. There is as such no deadline to replace the tricycles but the gas companies have been asked to replace the tricycles with e-vehicles at the earliest.
